The Market House Restaurant was established in 1982 by three women and was originally located on the corner of Perry and Commerce Streets.  At that time the restaurant was known as the Market House Tavern and served a very limited menu.  Some of the items can still be found on the menu today - Our Famous Homemade Crab Louis Salad, Galena's #1 Half Pound Tavern Burger, the Open Face Steak Sandwich, along with Beer Battered Onion Rings and the best Oven roasted Reuben you'll find in the Midwest.

In 1984 we relocated to 204 Perry Street, off the cobblestones going up the hill.  This relocation allowed for a seating capacity of 38 persons, almost doubling what we originally could seat.  We are now situated in one of the oldest building in Galena, the “Captain Reuben Brush Building” which is constructed of “Galena” brick.  With this move additions were also made to accommodate the growing clientele. Sitting in the ‘Front Room’ you will be intrigued with the patterns of the original tin ceiling while you look out over ‘Historic Downtown Galena’.

Though the building was built in 1836 by James Speer and S. B. Herron Contractors, the back structure was not enclosed until the mid 1900's.  In 1993 our 'Garden Room' was finished which allowed us seating for another 18 persons.  This comfortable room has been home to many birthday gatherings, engagement parties, baby showers, family reunions and individuals just looking for a quiet dining experience.  Choosing to dine in our 'Garden Room', you will be surrounded by live greenery along with a limestone and brick wall.

If you're looking for a smoke free, cute, quaint, cozy, and friendly atmosphere you'll find it here.  Walk along the cobblestones and find yourself at our original entrance or enter directly off of Main Street.  Either way, you'll find yourself enjoying Fine Food and Spirits in Galena's second oldest restaurant, The Market House Restaurant.
